Scotch Ales

Originally Edinburgh, Scotland’s answer to the English Burton Ale, Scotch Ale came in various strengths and colors as it became a general term for all Scottish export ales. Today the term refers to beers of amber to brown color, with modest to strong ABVs, low levels of hops, and in some examples elements of subtle smokiness. This smokiness can be achieved by using a specialty grain such as peated barley malt. These beers are a great treat for those who are not fans of hoppy ales, IPAs, or Imperial Stouts.

Oskar Blues Old Chub Nitro:  89 Points BA Very Good 6.9% ABV. When Oskar Blues decided to make a Nitrogen dispensed version of their Scotch Ale Old Chub they tweaked the recipe only by lowering the ABV from 8% to 6.9% by removing some of the 2 row barley malt, keeping all the specialty malts intact and delivering the same great malty flavor as the carbonated version. The difference is mostly in the mouthfeel and drinkability. Nitro slides down the throat like a draft beer. Utterly smooth and creamy, moderately sweet with just ghostly whispers of smokiness.$11.99 14.9 oz. 4 Pack Cans

Mayflower Scotch Ale: 88 Points BA Very Good  7.8% ABV. Pours a deep chestnut colored hue with great clarity and an inch thick beige head. Low carbonation in the mouth with a  rich and creamy texture. Great weight. Sweetness upfront with a deep caramel and toffee malt flavors. Their is an underlying hint of smoked barley which nails the style and adds a nice touch of complexity. The finish then switches gears and ends dry balancing out the beer keeping it from being to sweet and smooth adding a touch of backbone and making it enticing enough to want more. $11.99 12 oz. 4 Pack

Founders Backwoods Bastard:  97 Points BA World Class  10.2% ABV. This beer is Founders Dirty Bastard aged for 6 months in Kentucky Straight Bourbon Barrels. Dirty Bastard is an absolute beautiful beer to behold but Backwoods Bastard is off the charts delicious. Dark mahogany  in color and brewed with ten varieties of imported malts this beer is a bold and powerful ale. There is much flavor packed into one little bottle ranging from sweet maltiness to scotchy smoked malts and then waves of vanilla and boozy bourbon. A great beer to age as flavors mellow and marry with a years time.$17.99 12 oz. 4 Pack Bottles
