For the budget-minded consumer endowed with a learned palate Spain represents a treasure trove of delicious wines at very reasonable prices. Our selections this week are solidly in these categories: a white wine from a grape that is fast becoming Spain’s most attractive white source; a juicy, sexy red at a great price and finally, a traditional, earthy bottling that conveys Spain’s viticultural history with aplomb. Enjoy!

Papa Godello 2012 – This wine is a superb value made from estate owned, organically grown grapes. Ladera Sagrada has the largest holdings of vineyard land in the Valdeorras appellation, and the bodega makes wine using only the best 20% of its grapes. The rest of the given year’s harvest is sold in bulk to other neighboring producers. Ladera Sagrada can source the best quality of grapes in Valdeorras and it has the ability to make the best wine values because it doesn’t need to buy grapes from other growers. The vineyards farmed to make Papa are full of slate and granite, and the wine shows assertive aromas of rosemary, thyme, and oregano, underscored by a firm mineral character.$14.99

Zestos Old Vine Grenacha 2012 –  A staggering value, this wine was vinified in a combination of stainless steel and cement tanks. Made from old vine (over 40 years of age), high altitude (2800 feet) Grenache, this head-pruned vineyard planted on granite soils has produced an unbelievable wine for the price. Lots of kirsch, strawberry, black currant and licorice aromas jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, richly fruity, surprisingly intense red. Shows impressive energy and clarity on the finish, which features a zesty white pepper nuance. There’s a lot of wine here for the money. $9.99

Faustino VII 2010 –• Redcurrant and vanilla aromas lead way to a well-balanced mouthfeel of cranberry, cherry and toast. • Aged 2 years with 10 months spent in American oak• 95% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo. Flavors of cherry, tobacco and light earth remain harmonious through the spicy finish in this polished red. Moderate tannins and balsamic acidity impart balance. Pairs well with robust dishes created as the sun sets earlier and earlier. $10.99
